The Hunger: A Tabletop Game Beginners Can Feast on.

The Hunger is a vampire-themed deck-building board game centered around collecting the most blood in one night. Players’ speed is determined by the three cards they pull from their deck per round. To hunt, you, the player, must give up some of your speed to pick out cards from the hunt track and give up the designated number on top of the hunt track. The track cards can contain humans, familiars, or power-ups. There are other ways to gain extra blood by the end of the game; by stopping at graveyards, you can collect missions that, when requirements are met, gain you blood at the end of the game. If players feel extra spry, they can attempt to snag the Rose cards the furthest away from the castle. This can become a risky move as time ticks away and the sun starts to creep up as the night and game ends on the 15th round. Allowing other players to leave you in the dust as your character erupts into dust.
Now that you know the main meat of The Hunger, Is it a good game for Beginners to sink their teeth into?
Pros:
Easy Set Up
The Hunger is simple to set up. The board has clear areas for certain tokens, such as missions or powerups, on certain spaces, allowing beginners to understand how to set it up, even if it’s their first time. The setup can take only a few minutes for around 45 minutes of actual gameplay, which can be the biggest mood killer for beginners who want to easily jump right in!
Equal amounts of Luck and Strategy
Deck-building games can rely heavily on luck, only allowing you to strategize around the cards that fall into your hand each round. With The Hunger, you can still strategize outside of the luck of the cards that fall into your hands each round, with the freedom of multiple routes and the ability to head back to the castle whenever you desire. This gives beginners a better chance when playing against seasoned board game players.
Multiple Ways to Gain Blood
The main way to gain blood is by hunting human cards, but this isn’t the only way you can win The Hunger. Missions allow bonus points if you complete certain requirements or pick up tokens during your journey. This allows newer players multiple avenues to pick up points when they might struggle with balancing their desire to hunt humans and having enough speed to get back to the castle.
Con:
Roses have too many thorns
The Rose cards can only be obtained if you reach the very end of the track, which places you far away from the castle, raising the chances of you being caught when the sun is out. This is where the biggest obstacle for beginner players may come in. With such a high risk, the Roses are highly valued, tricking beginner and seasoned players into possibly going after them. The Roses only contribute a small amount of blood in the grand scheme of The Hunger. The reward should be as high if the risk is this high. This may make some beginners feel sour about hunting these cards as a goal.
Overall:
The Hunger is a fang-tastic game for beginners! With easy-to-follow mechanisms, cards with instructions reiterating how to use them, and freedom in the strategies and routes players can choose. All these aspects create a beginner-friendly game that even seasoned players can leave feeling satisfied. If you’re looking for a game to scratch any board game itch you may have, this is the perfect game to start with!
