On Cubicle

Marco Gamino

Editor-in-Chief

Cubicle is the first game I've written for and the first game Underscore Games will publish. Our team comprises people from diverse backgrounds across the U.S. For most of us, this is the first game they've ever worked on. When I started, Cubicle was just an idea—an idea that focused on creative freedom and replayability.

When I was hired as a writer for Cubicle, the game had only the concept and description. We knew that we wanted to somehow blend the gameplay of games similar to Cards Against Humanity with more improv and activities to make it a bit more engaging and unique—to create something that we personally hadn't seen before.

Much of our original work has made it to the final versions of Cubicle. Still, comparing the older cards from our initial concept to now, there is a significant difference in the card's language and feel. At first, we were naive enough to think that this game could be a quick turnaround, maybe only working on it for a year, a year and a half, but now, three years in, we realize that what we thought was a relatively easy game to develop, requires a lot of hard work.

We had to overcome many pitfalls and obstacles, along with aspects that we hadn't considered before. But as a team, we worked to achieve something that turned out to be even greater than we initially imagined. Over time, bringing in new people introduced new ideas and perspectives. We learned to question our decisions and ensure we were creating a unique game that everyone could enjoy.

Cubicle has been a trial by fire for us, but it has been the most fulfilling challenge for us as a company and as a team. It's taught us patience and, most importantly, collaboration. Being able to take in all ideas and create something that truly feels like all of us have worked on is an accomplishment like no other.

We wanted to thank every person who has supported us and past team members who have contributed their ideas and opinions. We wouldn't have reached this point without any of you, and we are truly thankful for your support. We hope that you enjoy our game and that you'll continue to support us.
